Airbus and Kratos have joined forces to offer the stealth drone XQ-58A Valkyrie to Germany, with potential for expansion to other European countries. The model, already in use by the USA, will receive a mission system developed by Airbus, making it more adaptable to Europe’s needs.

The partnership aims to deliver an affordable, high-capacity Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) ready for operation by 2029, strengthening the continent’s air defense in a time of growing tensions with Russia.

Although Germany has not yet confirmed the purchase, the Luftwaffe has shown interest in “loyal wingman” drones to operate alongside fighter jets such as the Eurofighter and the future F-35A. The Valkyrie, which can be launched without a runway and even from containers, would be ideal for missions close to NATO borders.

Meanwhile, Airbus is also developing its own concept, the Wingman, planned for the 2030s, but the Valkyrie emerges as a more immediate and battle-tested solution.

The initiative arrives at a crucial time, as European air forces are seeking cost-effective options to recover lost capabilities from budget cuts. The XQ-58A, though excluded from the first phase of the US CCA program, has drawn attention, especially after successful tests with the US Marines.

With adaptable versions, including one for electronic warfare, the drone could become a key piece in the restructuring of European air defense.
